out saying oh, barack obama, he bought votes, i would have won the election if he wouldn't have bought the votes. that's the logo of a guy who just makes excuses. >> so between the change of heart and all the interviews he's doing and the aspiring acting career, some people are saying that it's possible, just possible, that eric is doing all of this just to get attention. >> they couldn't be more correct. of course. who gets a tattoo on their face and isn't looking for attention? >> very thought provoking although perhaps not universally true. like maybe if somebody got a tattoo on their face that said i'm shy. in any event, if it was attention he was looking for, he definitely got it although the romney tattoo will soon fade into nothing but a cheeky memory, eric's place on the "ridiculist," that i promise you, is permanent. that does it for us. see you again one hour from now. erin burnett's "outfront" starts now. >>> 28 days away, what does it take for a deal? and the use of chemical weapons will bring an immediate reaction from the community. our panel, we'll ask them if the
that say we're putting revenue on the table, the american people did that when they elected, you know, the president and a democratic senate again. again, they have to agree to a deal or tax rates on everybody go up. i think we should do everything we can to avoid that for as many people as we possibly can. >> so far, four house gop members, as we said, john boehner has booted them from key committees for going against leadership. you're obviously the deputy whip. you are part of leadership. you have challenged john boehner. i mean, what you put out there, it may sound -- may sound very normal and calm and compromise-filled to many. but perhaps to him, it's a little bit of a slap in the face. have you talked to him about it directly? >> yeah, of course. i mean, look, i deal with the speaker on a regular basis. and he knows, look, i'm never going to undercut him and he knows when the tough votes come, and they're going to come, that i'll be there to try and support him and help him. so he's not going to scold me because i offered in private, you know, my advice that was solicited and t
the last election. >>> next, when the u.s. aimed high in the 1960s, we sent a man to the moon w the same effort, we can now cure cancer, that's what the head of the largest cancer center in the word, m.d. anderson says. >>> and america has lost it's number one standing in lotts of areas, from competitiveness to education, the new number one in most cases a scandinavian country, what is the credit sauce? we'll dig into it. but first here's my take. as we debate whether the two parties can ever come together and get things done, here is something president obama could do probably by himself that would be a single accomplishment of his presidency, end the war on terror. for the first time since 9/11, an administration official has raised this prospect. said in a speech to the oxford union last week, that as the battle against al qaeda continues, there will be come a tipping point as so many of the leaders and operatives of al qaeda have killed or captures such as al qaeda as we know it has been effectively destroyed. our efforts should no lo loaninger -- this is the longest period that the
the election, romney's stayed mostly out of the spotlight and pretty quiet. he and paul ryan met with president obama in washington last week. >>> witnesses say it was terrifying, a crushing tunnel collapse about 50 miles west of tokyo. authorities have recovered nine bodies, most of them from burned vehicles. experts say aging parts in the tunnel could be to blame. the disaster has prompted japanese officials to order emergency inspections of dudsens of other tunnels with similar designs across the country. >>> and here's a sign of the times. the pope is on twitter. the vatican today revealed pope benedict's personal handle is @pontifacts. the vatican said the pope believes the catholic church must be present in the digital arena. that's going to be hard to answer a question about faith in 140 characters. >> he'll probably have 1 million followers in two hours. >> he has more than 230,000 followers and he hasn't even had a single tweet. his name means bridge builder in latin. another name for the pope. >> yeah. i'll follow him. >> i will as well. >> are thank you very much. maybe if i follow h
now. the american people re-elected him and they re-elected us. that's not a mandate to raise taxes. that's what house speaker john boehner told fellow republicans during a weekly meeting, signaling he will push back on president obama's demand for tax hikes on the rich when it comes to the fiscal cliff. but treasury secretary timothy geithner says the white house will not give in. >> no prospect to an agreement that doesn't involve those rates going up on the top 2% of the wealthiest americans. remember it's only 2%. >> geithner adds the obama administration is, quote, absolutely prepared to go off the cliff, if necessary. joining me now is van jones, cnn contributor and former obama administration official. good morning. >> god morning to you. >> so, van, i guess my first question that's eatsy for geithner to say, we're perfectly willing to go off the fiscal cliff. that means a tax hike on middle class americans and maybe some of them are thinking this morning i'm not really so happy geithner said that. >> it might have been inartful for him to say it the way he said it. i think h
the cliff. that's why the day after the election i tried to speed this process up by making the concession to put revenues on the table. it's unfortunate that the white house has spent three weeks doing basically nothing. >> the administration has presented a plan that calls for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenues. $400 billion in cuts to medicare and other entitlements. $50 billion for a new stimulus and congress would have to give up control over raising the debt limit. republicans have indicated that they want to raise revenue by lowering tax deductions, haven't given any specifics yet. brings us right to white house correspondent brianna keilar. good morning, brianna. >> good morning to you, soledad. yes, things are at an impasse here. i will tell you the white house after not being very happy with the pace of negotiations the week before last sent treasury secretary tim geithner up to the hill to outline this proposal. there's a lot we already knew about that president obama had already taken a public position on. the white house is now saying to republicans as well, we want you to put
? he was just re-elected. why couldn't he put together a package, a deal to avoid this disaster? >> i think this is a question of political leadership. and as that poll showed, there's no doubt that the president has the political advantage going into this. but at some point, and i think we're kind of getting close to it, the president has to be able to pivot and to say how do i turn this political advantage into a real policy accomplishment? and, wolf, i don't think you're going to do that with continued campaign style events like we just saw meeting with middle class families. okay. we get that. that occurred during the campaign. the white house has clearly gotten its message out. i think now there has to be a next step. you know, timing is everything in politics. and this is absolutely no different. what i'm getting from talking to some democrats on the hill is i think there's actually a lot of pent up anger and frustration among democrats how they feel republicans were obstructionist for the last four years. there's a little bit of payback going on here. they've got the advantage.
, then has said no. you had for the first time the past election a couple states pass it in a statewide referendum, when previously when it was on the ballot it had gone down. this is a question that has had different answers in some states, and some states different answers different times within the same state. the supreme court providing a road map is helpful, if you want a 50 state solution. the question is is that what the constitution calls for. >> and will they provide it. >> the president personally supports now same sex marriage. he didn't used to. now he does. will the obama administration make the argument in favor of same sex marriage before the supreme court? >> my guess is that they may well be a friend of the court and doxactly that. i mean, you know, what everyone is hoping for, folks i talked to today, on the side of legalizing in a federal way same sex marriage is, you know, this would settle it. what they worry about is you'll get a decision that's kind of like murky. >> and you have a huge split even with the conservative movement, the dick cheney approach, each stat
-sex marriage should be legal. 46% say illegal. and on election day, voters in three states approved same-sex marriage. "outfront," mckay coppins, tim carney and maria cardona, cnn contributor and democratic strategist. this is kind of big news in all of this. tim, you saw the polls. now the supreme court will get involved in this. should this signal something to the republican party? should they say it's reached this level, we need to rethink our position on this? >> polls are one thing. there's also the fact most states don't have gay marriage yet and most of those that do, it was not put in by the will of the people. i'm a marylander. we did -- our state did vote for gay marriage. most of them had to do with judges ruling. if the supreme court does for gay marriage what it did for abortion and roe v. wade and said, no, this is not in the hands of the people. we're going to say there's gay marriage, that would do a lot to fire up the republican base and could turn this issue on its head and it could become a big winner for republicans because they'd feel disenfranchised. >> what about t
the election i tried to speed this process up by making a concession to put revenues on the table. it's unfortunate that the white house has spent three weeks doing basically nothing. >> speaker boehner added he is flabbergasted by the administration's proposals while secretary geithner said he believes a deal can be reached by the end of the year. >>> we could find out this morning if the supreme court will take up the issue of same-sex marriage. at 9:30 eastern, the court releases its orders list. there's a possibility justices will hear cases that challenge the federal defense of marriage act or california's proposition 8, which defines marriage as strictly between a man and a woman. >>> an evacuation order remains in effect this morning in louisiana as authorities rush to secure more than 6 million pounds of improperly stored gunpowder. the m6 powder was found on property leased by explo systems. an operation is underway to move that powder to underground storage facilities on the site. so far 1 million pounds has been safely stored, enough to fill 27 18-wheelers. >> a member of t
